This Victor Osimhen's victory marked him as the fifth Nigerian player to claim the award and the first since Nwankwo Kanu in 1999.

The success was especially significant as Victor played a pivotal role in Napoli securing a Scudetto dream. Fans, dubbing him the Prince of Naples, were elated at their team's unexpected triumph in the 2022–23 season.

Despite aiding Napoli in reaching the Champions League quarterfinals last season, Victor's injury proved detrimental. Unfortunately, this season, he faced challenges making an impact due to persistent injuries.

Notably, Victor Osimhen wasn't the sole Nigerian victor at the CAF Awards; Asisat Oshoala secured the Woman Player of the Year for an impressive sixth consecutive time.
